Make Fabric Origami (12421 Views)

We wanted to give origami, the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, a little BurdaStyle: instead of paper, we are using fabric! With a little bit of fabric stiffener and patience, you can use classic origami patterns to make fabric sculptures to top of gifts, brooches, fascinators, wreaths…. Your imagination is your only limit!

Step 1 of 6

Apply the stiffener to the fabric as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow to dry.
Step 2 of 6

Use an L-square to mark a square. Ours is 6” x 6”. Cut out your square.
Step 3 of 6

Fold your square according to your instructions. Origami Fun has great, free, easy-to-understand instructions. You may need a surface harder than your fingers to get clean creases; we used the edge of our chalk wheel.
Step 4 of 6

So pretty!
Step 5 of 6

Attach your fabric sculpture to whatever your project is, via handstitching, or maybe glue. We put ours on a barret, but other possibilities are wreaths, gift-toppers, headbands or fascinators As the fabric is quite stiff, you may need to use a thimble for the handstitching.

Materials

Small pieces of thin woven fabrics; we used silk taffeta L-square, chalk, scissors, origami instructions

What a lovely and distinctive project! I love origami and I'm just getting to grips with fabric creations so this is something I'm definitely goin to try. One question - what kind of fabric stiffener is being used here? Could you use stiff interfacing instead?
