classic book bag (part 2)* (5306 Views)
just a simple little bag, but amazingly versatile. use your creativity and have fun! mine is pretty big because im making it to use as my school bag, however, you can adjust the pattern to any size you'd like. * i had to split this project into two parts because i am doing a lining and otherwise this how-to would just be too long. sorry!

Step 1 of 19
hello again children! ok once we have done everything in the first how-to, cut out two pieces of your lining fabric using the pattern we made in the last how-to.
-
Step 2 of 19
now, stitch these 2 pieces of fabric together exactly the same way we did it in the first how-to, and don't forget to put the right sides together. you can look back at the first how-to if you need a little reminder of where to sew. http://www.burdastyle.com/howtos/show/1145
-
Step 3 of 19
after following the steps in the first how-to, your lining bag should look like this. you can add a pocket in before you stitch it or after. (it doesnt really make a difference)
-
Step 4 of 19
now you can stitch up some handles. do it any way you'd like.
-
Step 5 of 19
i made mine nice and long :)
-
Step 6 of 19
alright. now, the fabric bag that you wish to be on the outside, should be INSIDE OUT
-
Step 7 of 19
and the lining fabric bag should be RIGHT SIDE FACING OUT
-
Step 8 of 19
now keep the bags like that, and stuff the lining bag into the outside fabric bag and line up the edges.
-
Step 9 of 19
it should look like one big bag with 2 layers. double check to see that when you look into the bag, you see the wrong side of your lining fabric. and when you look on the outside, you see the wrong side of your outside fabric. got it?
-
Step 10 of 19
line up the side seams and pin them so they don't move.
-
Step 11 of 19
now you can pin the 2 bags together as shown in the photo. make sure everything is evened out.
-
Step 12 of 19
okay. measure where you'd like your handles to be, and put a little mark.
-
Step 13 of 19
this is kinda wierd, so look at the diagram as much as possible. you want to put your handles BETWEEN your 2 layers of fabric, with the ends poking out. this is because you want the handles to be a part of the seam of the bag. it'll all make sense later, so just do what i say and no one gets hurt. hehehhh
-
Step 14 of 19
sew sew sew around the edge of your (whats starting to look like a bag) making sure to go back and forth over the handles just to reinforce them. BUT WAIT!!! make sure to leave a HOLE big enough for you to stuff your hand through.
-
Step 15 of 19
alright so once you've done that, you'll wanna stick your hand in that hole you made and pull the whole thing inside out. (well it will actually be right side out but whatever) it will look like this funky creature right here. (i think i spoke too soon about it starting to look like a bag)
-
Step 16 of 19
now you can collapse the lining side of the bag into the other side like so.
-
Step 17 of 19
yayy this is exciting noww! lets iron down your seam.
-
Step 18 of 19
ok just stitch along the edge again using like a 1/2 inch of seam allowance.
-
Step 19 of 19
TA DAAA!! your perfect new bag. ENJOY!
Materials
cotton canvas, cute cotton print, and something for the handle

This looks really cool! I'm going to try it with old bath towels & use it as a beach bag. Really usable & washable too! Thanks a mil!
I just finished this bag and I love it! I added a couple of pockets and I think it turned out really well! Thanks so much for the instructions! GoodAZgone, I love the idea of making it out of towels for use as a beach bag! I might have to try that myself!
Great tutorial. This is the first thing I have made in 6 years. Though I messed up badly by sewing the lining in the wrong way it came out pretty well. Thank you!
I'm making this because I really need it... My school bag is fallin' apart... HH Mery
