Here is a quick how to for the Knife Pleat, the most basic and common pleat used in sewing. It is a single pleat turned in one direction.

    Step 1 of 14

First you will mark the distance of your pleats. Knife pleats have a 3:1 ratio –three inches of fabric will create one inch of finished pleats. For this how to I made ½” pleats, so you will mark the fabric 1”, then ½”, then 1”, then ½” and so on. Also see a description on the forum

Fantastic Tutorial! I really like the pictures, esp the "this is what it should look like". With woolens, esp. tartans, this should be very helpful. It is also helpful for sewing costume. Please do one on cartidge pleating!
