  Step 1 of 16

  First find two items of clothes (i used skirts) making sure there is enough fabric in them both to make the vest, and cut them open to lay them flat.

  Step 2 of 16

  Pin your pattern (preferably printed on recycled paper) to the fabric and cut out. Cutting pieces for the outside of the vest from your main colour and pieces for the lining from your contrasting colour.

  Step 3 of 16

  Ensure that you mark all pattern marking onto your fabric. I like to do this with a contrasting thread.

  Step 4 of 16

  Overlock/serge all pieced if you can. Placing middle back pieces right sides together sew the middle seam. Press seam open (remember, press everything!)

  Step 5 of 16

  Fold latch pieces and press, sew around edge leaving bottom open. Turn and press. Pin in place and baste.

• 

  Step 6 of 16

  Add darts to the middle front pieces if required. Pin and sew side front pieces to middle fronts and side back pieces to middle backs.

  Step 7 of 16

  Iron interfacing onto wrong side of flap fronts. Pin flap fronts and flap lining right sides together.

• 

  Step 8 of 16

  Sew around flap leaving bottom open, turn and press. Pin flap to the line marked on your fabric, flap facing up and stitch. Trim seam allowance.

  Step 9 of 16

  Fold over and press, stitch along the base seam.

  Step 10 of 16

  Place front pieces right sides facing onto back piece, pin and sew side seams, press open.

  Step 11 of 16

  Sew up lining in the same way but leaving a 20cm opening in the middle to allow for turning. You may notice I didn’t have enough of the lining fabric so I improvised and used some of the black for the front side pieces.

  Step 12 of 16

  Place the vest pieces (main fabric and lining) together right sides facing and pin. Sew around leaving shoulders open. Clip curves and trim corners.

  Step 13 of 16

  Turn right sides out through opening in lining and press.

• 

  Step 14 of 16

  Pin the main fabric pieces of the shoulders together and sew.

  Step 15 of 16

  Reach into lining opening and pull through one shoulder at a time. Pin the shoulder seam lining and sew. Pull the lining’s shoulder seam out from the vest and sew the open seams at neck and arm seams.

  Step 16 of 16

  Sew the opening closed by hand. Sew around the seams of the vest. Sew buttonholes to right front and sew buttons to left front. I used some vintage self covering buttons from my stash and covered them with the same fabric. Fold the front edges of the neckline along the wrap line facing out, lightly press. Sew in place with a few hand stitches.
