Step 1 of 6
Fabric Pieces needed:
Front and Back Piece, each 8 ¼ inches by 6 ¼ inches
Side Piece, twice, 6 ¼ inches by 2 ¾ inches
Bottom, once, 8 ¼ inches by 2 ¾ inches
Strap Piece, twice, 1 3/8 inches by 11 ¾ inches
Lining for Front and Back Pieces, each 9 ¼ inches by 6 ¼ inches
Lining for Side Piece, twice, 7 ¼ inches by 2 ¾ inches
Lining for Bottom, once 9 ¼ inches by 2 ¾ inches
Lining for Strap, twice, 2 inches by 12 ½ inches
-
Step 2 of 6
1) Use quilting thread. Sew the side pieces with handstitches to the front piece, seam ¼ inches in from the edge, then attach the bottom piece to the front and side pieces with the same seam allowance.
-
Step 3 of 6
2) Attach the back piece to the side and bottom pieces in the same way, than the front was attached
3) Line the straps with the lining pieces that you have cut. Fold the lining under on each side for about ¼ inch and place it on the Inside of the Strap. Attach lining either by machine topstich or handstitching
-
Step 4 of 6
4) Attach the straps to the bag. The strap reaches about 1 ½ inches deep into the bag (or on the outside 1 ½ inches below the top of the bag). You can attach them with a straight line at the bottom of the strap, sew them to the bag with an “X” shaped stitch, add a button, its up to you….

Step 5 of 6
5) The lining of the bag needs to be about 1/8 smaller all around than the outside of the bag in order to fit correctly. Sew it right side facing in.
To strengthen the bottom of the bag, cut a strap of cardboard that is the approximate size of the bag’s bottom. Place cardboard and then Lining inside the bag.
6) On the top of the Bag fold the lining under so that you can attach it with a handstitch about ¼ inch from the upper edge of the bag.

Step 6 of 6
8) If you plan to do decorative stitching or sew patches, buttons or other decorations onto the
bag, this is best done before you line the bag.

Hi Milmomma, I would love to help you with your question, but somehow it got erased from the comment list. However here is what you should do. I did not attach the lining to the fabric of the bag before step 1. I handstitched the bag together and then handstitched the lining together separately. (measure the fabric for the lining a bit smaller, so that it fits easily into the bag). Once you stitched the lining together, you can set it into the inside of the bag. Then fold over the top edges of the lining and handstitch it onto the bag. I suggest to put a piece of cardboard in the bottom of the bag, before setting in the lining, it makes your bag sturdier. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions.
Hi Jenniffer, Thanks for your comment, somehow the first step of my how to, which gives you dimension and needed fabric amount got deleted. I will fix it, then you can find that information in the first step of the how to. I am glad you like the bags.. Best Wishes
Hi Jennifer,
All the information you were missing is now under step 1. Sorry it took so long, I had to help Johanna, since there was a bit of a bug in the backend. I hope you have a great time making the bags and share with us how they came out.
just out of curiosity, roughly how much will this bag hold weight wise? I really like it, but I'm worried that if I were to use it for something like books that it would tear.
Thanks!
what are the measurements?
