Open Source Sewing

Open source sewing patterns are patterns with no copyright. You can use them, change them and whatever you sew, you can sell if you like. We believe that removing copyrights from our designs will inspire creativity and result in multiple new designs - and that's wonderful!

What is Open Source Sewing?

Open Source:

Open source is a movement that originated from the software world and now can be applied to anything. It discloses information to production, resources, or information. It is powerful, and many think it is the enlightenment movement of the 21st century. Open source does not equal cost-free. Open does not mean free as in free food, but free as in free speech.

Open Source applied to sewing:

The community shares patterns and the knowledge of changing design and sewing. The design is copyright-free. One design can be used as the initiator for many other ideas. Products will be developed further and improved. Creations that are made out of original pattern can be sold to make a living.

Vision:

Open Source Sewing is adopted in the sewing community world-wide, hence fosters creativity, revives sewing and offers makers a new form of earning their living. Other (craft) communities follow this vision.

That means:

The site is pioneer of open source sewing and acts as a platform for

Sharing information: Design, its process, sewing knowledge

Networking: Connecting designer, patternmaker, creator, seller, and buyer

Product quality and improvement: Great fit and variation through the Burda pattern making competence and the constant testing and feedback of users

Creativity multiplication: Encouragement of design change and teaching how to do so

Marketplace: People get visibility for their product, attention of potential buyers
