I just bought 6 yards of 100% silk suiting herringbone fabric (on the cheap...$4/yd) and the color is much brighter than I expected. It looked like a muted blue-grey, but it's more like bright aqua! I want to figure out if dying the fabric is a reasonable option. I'd like to to get darker so it's less intense: more grey or even plum- just not so Malibu Barbie bright blue. If anyone has ideas, I'd love to hear them. The fabric is too nice to give away but I can't deal with that hue!
I had some green jeans once (hand-me-downs, when I wuz a lad in the early 80's...), which were a bit too hippy for me, so I tried dying them with dark blue. The result was a near black.
I guess you could try a burgundy/dark red, to avoid ending up with acid-purple or something more hideous.
The only kind of dye I have had any kind of success with is Dysan (may have spelt it wrong) the (very) hot water type. The cold water one is not so great. It would also depend on the washability of your fabric (not too sure about your silk).
You should be able to dye your fabric successfully, but you need an acid dye for silk, not a standard procion dye like Dylon Cold Water Dye or their machine dyes. Look for something like this: http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/1344-AA.shtml?lnav=dyes.html
