Incredibly frustrated with neck and collar on men's shirt
I guess first I should say hello! I'm just getting into sewing because I'm incredibly skinny and can never find clothes that fit me! So I figure I'd start making my own. But I've hit a snag!
I can't figure out how to get the collar, neckband, and shirt all together! I've tried following the pattern instructions but they've left me confused. It said to put one piece of the neckband on the shirt, then the collar to that piece, and whatever but it seemed incredibly difficult!
I checked out this tutorial on the site (http://www.burdastyle.com/howto/show/82#) but I'm confused at what happens in steps 7 and 8. Does she sew the neckband to the collar with the right sides facing in and then pulls it down so right sides are out? Does what I said even make sense?
Any help would be appreciated! I'm so frustrated at this part! Thanks!
StrayCat, I used to work on a charter boat named the "Stray Cat"...lovely. Anyway, this is not your typical collar as you may have noticed and I understand your frustration. I think I see what she did here, it is not how you would normally attach a collar; it seems instead of sewing it "inside out, right sides together with finished collar sandwiched between the neckline & a facing", as a shirt pattern would regularly call for, she pressed & folded the seam allowance on the "stay" inwards and just top-stitched it to the neckline of the shirt. So the seam is virtually the top-stitch.
See above how the bottom top-stitched line of the stay is a little wavy? I think this answers your question: it was simply top-stitched on with seam allowances pressed inwards.
So, to clarify, when you're sewing the collar to the shirt, you are looking at the inside of the shirt with the inside of collar on top of it.
Does this make sense?
Well, I followed the tutorial as best I could. In the end, I think I did exactly what it said, but I just didn't understand it :P Here's a picture of how it came out:
It came out surprisingly well, especially since it was my first attempt at doing this and this is my second attempt at making a shirt ever. The only problem I encounter was probably in the measuring part, since my collar ended up being too long compared to the shirt, and extended over the button holes quite a bit. I was impatient, so I kind of snipped them, then sewed around the edged, which looks awful. I'll have to keep this in mind for next time. I'm still just practicing, so no worries.
Next is my first attempt at arm sleeves. Wish me luck :)
