I've seen several posts in different Categories which are essentially people looking to connect (i.e. meet) with other people in particular localities. I wonder if there isn't a need for a kind of Geographic Networking thread/forum. I'm not sure that posting individual requests like this in one category or another is very effective. I certainly don't read all the messages on the website and I doubt many others do either. This is a kind of service issue, because once the group connects, their business is likely to occur mostly off-site. I'm not sure how this could be organized to make it effective, either. Perhaps other people have better ideas about this...
Would it be possible somehow to search for members according to their location? I know this doesn't help much with the USA, but with other smaller countries (like mine) it would immediately give us a good idea of who's here...
Marmota, you can do that. Just go to "members" and click on catagorize by "location". It's all alphabetized. Admittedly, since we are nearing 10,000 members, it might take a while to find the correct page where, say, "Brooklyn" is listed, but once you find it, everyone's there.
It's definitely clunky to get around in the Members pages. I find it's easiest to paste in the search parameters the website generates (e.g. "http://www.burdastyle.com/member?sortby=location&page=169&filter=avatars") and change the page number based on best guess of likely location of place names - otherwise, it takes a lot of paging through to get to a site of interest when there are over 500 pages!
searching by state in the USA is an obvious thing to do as every state is about 10 times the size of Ireland... but when you are searchng for members in Ireland you have to search by county names like Galway, Dublin etc when there could be members anywhere in the country! it would be easier if you could search by country and then list the counties/states alphabetically. i have posted this suggestion before but like alot of the posts they are in under many different category headings! I would like to get to know members in Ireland as i don't know anyone else who sews... it's not very common here so maybe it's time to spread the word about burdastyle:)
I think I tried to add something to the discussion and forgot I wasn't logged in, so I gave up in the end... and forgot all about it. I really think it would be awesome if we could really SEARCH in the members pages, not just sort them. It's possible to use the search option, of course, but that's not quite the same... Maybe sorting them not only into a long list according to the alphabetical order of the location, but also breaking them into smaller groups? Like, having A, B, C, D etc. on separate pages and being able to go straight to, let's say, S?
Being able to connect with other members in person would be great. I like both suggestions for finding members nearby: a search feature and also member listings by country with sub-menus for state/county/province/etc. and city/village/place names.
City names can be used in more than one location within a country, so the current location listing isn't entirely helpful.
Finding places whose names have more than one word is also a challenge. I have yet to find Ann Arbor (Michigan, USA) in the member list by location, even though I know there is at least one of us living here!
