hi all, I've been trawling the internet and pattern books for a 1940s-style playsuit - you know, the tailored sort, fairly short on the leg and maybe a vest-style top but I still can't find one! i want to use stiff cotton for that tailored look. does anyone know a place i can find one or better still have a pattern like that? thanks! Bx

Hello
If you cut and paste the above web address into an search engine - once you get to the vintage sewing page click the 1940's and it will have a wide selection of patterns from the era also there is one for a shorts playsuit (Chapter XV—Trousers, Shorts, Plus-Fours, Ski-ing Trousers, and Riding Breeches)- the only thing is that you will have to draft the patterns up.
I hope this information is helpful to you - it's a great book - my mum has a copy of this book and I am so glad to see it uploaded so I can get some new patterns drafted myself now as and when.

thanks so much for that - but it's a bit out of my league - it seems quite complicated making the pattern yourself (something i've never done before) very much appreciated though!
I just went to eBay and Google and searched both for "vintage playsuit pattern" with great success. It may take some searching to find exactly what you want but I think it's your best bet. Just be aware, if you've never sewn with a vintage pattern, they only come in one size and the sizes have changed significantly since the 1940's. Be sure you know what the measurements of the pattern are before you buy it. Another way to go would be to find a shorts pattern and a vest pattern you like and put them together. You can search through the Vintage Pattern Wiki and search "playsuit". Click on the entries under "Page text matches." You may be able to get some ideas there or even find a specific vintage pattern you like that you can then search for online.
Good luck.
