There are actually several free patterns online if you search google. I make one out of fleece that is more the style for sighthound type dogs. It can be altered easily though for straighter backed dogs. I wish I knew I how to make a pattern to add.
I guess it depends on what kind of coat you are looking for.
Hi myra_lee. I made a dog coat but I didn’t use a pattern… basically I just measured the dog and looked at pictures of other coats to get an idea of the shape. I measured the dog from the back of his neck to his tail, and then across his shoulders to the top of his front legs, and across his haunches to the top of his back legs. You draw a square onto a piece of newspaper with these dimensions and draw in some extensions from the shoulders that will wrap around when the dog is wearing the coat ad be fastened in front with velcro or snaps. To keep the back part of the coat on the dog when its wearing it I put some elastic from one side to the other, going under the dog, one end fastened with velcro. Here’s a picture of mine
At first when I wanted to make the dog coat I was going to buy a pattern but they were all $12-15 and I saw that even with a purchased pattern, you still have to adjust it to the specific dog you are fitting. Before you cut it out of fabric cut the pattern out of the newspaper or maybe interfacing and sorta have your dog model it for you so you can see where you need to make any adjustments.
Can’t wait to see your dog in a little coat :o)
