I thought I would start this thread in response to the one on fall sewing….

So my fellow counterparts that live in the southern hemisphere, are you amping up the spring sewing?

I have a great cotton print that I am itching to make into a nice skirt or dress but I have to wait a few more weeks until I get my current batch of costuming done. :(

What are you guys up to?

I’ve been trying to make cotton dresses and skirts and things for the coming weather. I’d kind of like to make a bathing suit but as I’ve never made one before I’m a little apprehensive…how difficult is it and what is the best kind of fabric to use?

I don’t really think that stretch sewing is that difficult, but that could be because that is what I mostly sew. People are scared of it for some reason. :) The best kind of fabric to use is nylon lycra which is fairly easy to come get in most fabric shops and you can get lots of different patterns for sewing swimsuits as well. One of the first books/patterns I bought was a kwik sew one all about swimwear and active wear and while I have figured out my own way of doing some techniques the basics are pretty much the same and this book is really good at step by step and explaining what to do.

I’ve just started two jackets (Hikaru & Stella) because although it is warming up I am going home to visit NZ in November where it will feel much colder for me having fully acclimatised to Perth now :) I have started thinking about some summer dresses too since I now love wearing dresses (I never did until I made my own, hehe) and I got some beautiful satin from Spotlight just last night that will make a beautiful spring/summer evening dress, I can’t wait to start. I love when the fabrics change in the shops for the coming season, it gets me excited and starts lots of new sewing ideas forming.

Canberra is still a little cool at night but we have had some great days just recently, so have run up a couple of dresses for my girls (2 + 6) to take on hols to Sydney, Hopeing to get a couple of summer tops done for me, but have my heart set on making my version of Olya_Boieru’s The Color, I have the pattern and now the fabric , a soft semisheer soft green with sunflowers, now I just need the time to make a muslin so that I can get stuck in to the real thing.

Hi,I’ve been working my way through some chiffon type fabric in my pile. I’ve done a loose fitting shirt along the lines of one that was in the April burda mag (the india styled one). A girl at my sewing group gets burda from the US. In the July mag was a one sleeve top which is so EASY. I’ve just about finished that in another silky fabric. I’ll think I’ll keep sewing silk tops until I get sick of French seams.

I’m drafting a short sleeved cotton overcoat at the moment for those still quite cool evenings here in Auckland, I have a lovely royal blue cotton and it’s going to be unlined, just enough to keep the chill out.

I’m concentrating more on getting my sewing room into a state I can actually work in, and getting my fabric and pattern stash ready for summer as I plan to use spring as my summer sewing time :)

Does anyone know any online stores (other than spotlight, i guess thats semi-online) that sells floral printed chiffons or satins? Kiraph – I’m scared of stretch! Maybe you could do a ‘how to sew stretch fabric for dummies’ , I wouldn’t mind some pointers lol

You could try tessuti (www.tessuti-shop.com) figmentos – but they are kind of pricey. Try looking on ebay as well? I can never seem to find very many when I do a search either!

Next time I am making a simple leotard or crop top I will do a how to for you! Do you just need to know how to do the seams, and how to finish off and things like that? Let me know what you would like to know and I’ll do my best to come up with something for you.

tessuti thats right, Ive come across them before but forgotton what they where called.

Stretch, i have no idea how to sew it so that the appropriate edges s-t-r-e-t-c-h with the fabric (and stretch back again~rip rip~) I haven’t tried it in possibly years lol

But i have that problem with things like t-shirts etc, they’re not really stretch but the seams have a lot of give, but the stitching doesn’t look loose or anything..

I want to make the Coffee Date Dress but I’m still looking for some nice Spring/Summer fabric. I’ve been looking for printed georgette without much success.
