Here’s another one of my crazy ideas, and one that would require more resources than I have readily available to implement (hence something for BurdaStyle, I think). Why not develop a contest for “best digital fabric design” – the winner would have their fabric design displayed prominently on the site, could have her or his design printed onto fabric “free of charge” by BurdaStyle and even (why not) incorporated into a BurdaStyle design. It would encourage the BurdaStyle community (which includes many artistic as well as sewing talents) to think about and explore the possibilities of digital fabric printing, which is still not part of the mainstream practice of DIY sewers. I’m sure it would be relatively straightforward to find a “sponsor” for the contest – for example, an existing digital print shop interested in promoting their services. There maybe a few copyright issues to spell out, and some “rules” or “guidelines” in terms of image size and resolution to specifiy, but this shouldn’t require too much thought.

Hey Gedwoods! Hope you are having a great day!
Have you been to the website of http://www.spoonflower.com/welcome ? You can use their site to design fabrics free of charge but of course if you wish to have it printed up it will cost. I have bought from them in the past and it seems to be quality fabrics that they print on.
Anyway, I know that BS worked with them back around the holidays as one of the giveaways, so using them might be a good idea.
I will let the team know about another one of your brilliant ideas. Thanks again!

I do production work for a local fabric designer who uses Spoonflower to print her fabrics. I’m not at all impressed with their quality of fabric, but there printing is impeccable and I’ve tested the dyes in her scraps and they don’t bleed. The fabric that they sell for $18 per yard is not much better than the muslin you pay $2 a yard for at Jo-Ann’s. I know what they are doing is not cheap, with a used refurbished printer selling for $27,000, you have to make it affordable somehow, unfortunately in this situation it’s the quality of the fabric that suffers.

Recently Spoonflower upgraded some of their fabrics to add more quality fabrics and organic ones too. There are few different types to choose from. I agree that the prices are extremely high and they don’t have a large selection of fabrics to print on but when you want your own design I guess we have to pay for it. LOL Unfortunately there are so few that do this type of service, so maybe in the future when and if this catches on, this area will have better prices with more fabric choices.
