I been using zigzag stitch since I don’t have an overlock(serger) machine.
when i use the zigzag stitch, the ordinary zigzag stitch, it pulls the fabric into a tunnel and the fabric rolls under the stitch — it is not desirable at all!!
How can I correct this? I heard you can use a three step zigzag stitch to overcome this problem but I am using zigzag to encase my fringes to stop the fabric from fringing. And a three step aigzag stitch doesn’t encase the frills(is it fringes or frills? my English is not too great).
ANy of you have any advice? is it the tension problem?please help!

did I post this correctly?

Yes. :)
As for the stitches curling up: your tension is too high. Slacken off the upper thread tension and test. If you still get wrinkles, slacken off the bobbin tension a mite as well.
Also, if you have an over-edge foot, use this when you are zigzagging right on the edge of things.

thanks- i’ve tried your advice- I’ve tries loosening the upper thread tension but it did not work. How do I loosen the bobbin thread tension? I don’t know how to do this.

To loosen the bobbin thread probably depends on your machine. My Kenmore has a removable bobbin casing with a screw that can be turned to tighten/loosen the tension. I’m not sure how drop in bobbins work though. You should consult your sewing machine manual if you have it.

thanks for reply. I have a babylock sewing machine and it has drop in bobbin. The manual only instructs to use the tension adjustment dial. I think this only works for top thread…. When I takeout the bobbin shuttle, it does have a little screw. Is this the screw that I need to adjust?

The screw will be one of two holding down the leaf spring on the outside of the bobbin case. It’s the one closer to the middle of the spring you want, not the end one holding the thing on. :)
