So I broke my top needle on my Babylock serger, so I replaced it and rethreaded it. However, whenever the needle pierces through the fabric, it doesn’t stay! It just leaves a long line of thread. Does anyone know how to fix this? It’s driving me crazy!

Have you tried completely unthreading and rethreading it?

Yeah, it works now, but now I think the tensions all wonked up. How do you fix up the tension on the serger?

Strip all the thread off it. Dial the tension back to zero. ‘Floss’ between the tension disks with a lint free microfiber lens cloth (NOT one of those ones impregnated with lens cleaner!). Set all the tension dials to the middle of their ‘normal’ range.
Now set the cutting width to 4mm. Thread up carefully, following your threading diagram exactly, with 4 different threads to match each thread path… Test on a medium weight cotton like calico/muslin.
Adjust the tension thread by thread, loopers first, until you have a perfect stitch. This is your baseline setting and where you start from to get the correct tension for each project.
Remember that with a serger, the way you get different stitches is all a matter of adjusting the tension to get the effect you are after, and each time you thread the machine with a different thread, for a different fabric, or for a different process, you must test the stitch and adjust the tension to get the effect you are after.
