I live in the UK but am about to go home to NZ for a visit. Can anybody recommend good (not too expensive) fabric shops in Auckland or Sydney (I will also visit here). Also, my boyfriend is about to go to Chicago and Peoria (Illinois) for work and has begrudgingly agreed to get me some fabric out there, so if you can recommend a good shop out there it would be most appreciated!

    hi there

there are two must visits in Auckland – Global Fabrics which is at 139 Newton Rd & Centrepoint Fabrics in Teed St Newmarket – both quite often have designer ends of rolls – gorgeous silks & Global Fabrics have a lot of Merino Knit. Trelise Cooper also has a fabric & trimmings shop at 479 Parnell Rd. Have fun – I always come home to Chrischurch with a length or 2 from Centrepoint & all these 3 stores are fairly close together. Chicago is a great place to shop for fabric. Avoid the big chain stores, and instead head to Chicago’s fabric mecca, Vogue Fabrics. Gorgeous, quality fabric, huge selection, great prices. There’s a big one in Evanston (a suburb of Illinois, reachable by the subway), and there’s a slightly-less-big-but-still-big one just south of downtown on Roosevelt Road. The benefit of going to the one on Roosevelt is that right near it are Fishman’s Fabrics (super super top quality, rare and luxury fabrics, and priced accordingly) and Rainbow Fabrics, a great little mom and pop shop with some beautiful stuff and good prices. Search for these places on yelp.com for more info.

In Sydney the best fabrics from the rest of the world are available from Tessuti Fabrics. 110 Commonwealth st Surry Hills, 55 York st in the city, & 1st floor Victoria Plaza 369 Victoria Ave Chatswood. They are also available online. Saigon Fabrics 78 Erskine st city is brilliant for high end fabrics.

    Hi!

For cheaper fabrics in Auckland there are (or were, 2 years ago – haven’t been home in a while!) a number of Indian importers along Karangahape Road (K road to locals) that had lovely silks and Indian brocades. Along Dominion Road there were also some Asian stores (Nick’s Fabrics was one I think) and a big cheap fabric and haberdashery emporium (Geoff’s Emporium). And of course, the ever present Spotlight is a huge soul-less fabric, haberdashery and homewares store. There are a few around on the outskirts of the city.

Afraid the Indian importers are long gone from K Road – don’t forget Ikes Emporium! Almost always manage to find way too much there :)
