I’m making a bathing suit with bright turquoise and medium-sized white polka dots (about the size of my thumb nail). I have no idea what color thread to choose!

Does anyone have any advice?

Thank you :)

You could do a test swatch. Cut a square of your fabric about 4 inches to a side and run a couple lines of stitching in each colour. Then wrap a dummy or a friend in your fabric with your swatch pinned on and look at it from across a room.

Me being cheap, I’d use white, because I’ve always got some in my stash :P

A variegated thread with turquoise tones and maybe orange-if you feel you need to make the suit an attention getter.

Or pick a darker blue thread-a shade or two darker than the turquoise or go darker like royal blue.

Use thread to match the background colour. Use 120’s poly in the needles and bulk/wooly nylon in the loopers of the overlocker/serger to provide adequate stretch and coverage in your stitching. Don’t forget to fit the machine with STRETCH needles designed for use with elastane (Lycra) fabrics.

I would not advise making stretch fabric swimwear with an ordinary sewing machine as the stretch and strength needed in the seams of a swimsuit is generally far greater than can be achieved with an ordinary sewing machine, even using stretch sewing techniques.
