I’m embarking on a nice winter coat, but it’s a very old pattern and does not specify what kind of fabric I should be using for the underlining. The underlining is being basted to each piece of fashion fabric prior to sewing. My other fabrics are a medium weight wool blend and a nice quality coat lining for the inside. Does anyone have any idea of what I should use for the underlining? I don’t even know what weight of material it should be, and I’m inexperienced in coat making.

    Use needs to match purpose. If you are doing it for wind-proofing, you need something with a close, dense weave, like pillow ticking. If you want warmth, Thinsulate is the stuff,. If it’s to stabilize a loose weave fashion fabric, a light weight canvas…

    We shall shortly be making tailored coats out of silk dupion – the least tailorable type of silk on the planet! In order to give it the necessary oomph, it’ll get interlined with calico.

    Thank you Kate!! That’s very helpful. Is it possible to use a Thinsulate in the body of coat and then just use muslin to reinforce the fabric in the arms? I’m worried about bulk, but would like it to be warm.
