I’m making a dress with a u-shaped neck and I just sewed on the neck facing to see how it looked and horror of horrors (ok maybe a little dramatic but still) the whole neckline has stretched ever so slightly so that the whole thing waves. I did stay stitching before sewing the facing on as instructed, but this did not seem to prevent the wave. I’ve sent the thing through the dryer and the heat seems to be helping it bounce back but I’m afraid that the whole thing will just stretch back out again when I wear it.

Is there a more permanent solution to the waving? Would interfacing help? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you so much in advance and I hope I was at least sort of clear.

I would definitely interface—that should hopefully stabilise the fabric and prevent it from waving.

Hi Katya13, What kind of fabric did you use? If it’s a knit (in the future) you could use a stabilizer (like Solvy) or even tissue paper when stitching to prevent the stretching. Lately I’ve been using clear elastic on necklines too. I just zigzag it on the edge before stitching the neckline seem. As for the problem now…If it’s possible somehow, maybe you could try attaching clear elastic to the upper edge of the facing. I have some RTW that also has satin lingerie elastic sewn on the neckline facing, just below the seam. That may work just as well. That’s all I can think of — hope it helps. ~Jen
