Hello-
I would like to make this skirt available here:

http://www.burdastyle.com/projects/in-gray-bsm-52010#begin-comments

I’ve been sewing for many years, although I am just learning about fabric and fabric choices. I’ve realized the garment is only worth the fabric it’s sewn with. That being said, I would like to make this skirt in a “traditional” type fabric (something kaki skirts and pants that RTW garments are made from). I’d also like to make it in a modern type print also.
Could someone tell me what specific type of (cotton) I should be looking for? The drape and weight of skirt using the fabric shown is perfect. Also, where is the best online source for this? (I don’t have any good fabric shops in my area)
Thank you in advance,
Syndi

Quite a problem there. To start, in Australia, my favourite dress fabrics come from online – Tessuti Fabrics. The fabric in this picture reminds me of a stretch polyester. But with a photo it is very hard to tell. By best advice would to be get yourself to a fabric shop and look at the weight and drape in person. Purchase samples. This will not only help with this project but with others too.

Hi Syndi, I made the skirt in a mid-weight cotton that is kind of like a lightweight canvas. This particular fabric had a little texture to it - like a “parachute” grid. This pattern should work well with any fabric that has a little bit of body and/or crispness to it. A light to mid-weight twill would be good if it is not too soft (drape-y). A mid-weight crisp linen or similar blend would also be great. I tend to think that a sateen, sometimes used for the safari look, would be too soft-well, it would be fine, but it wouldn’t show off the pleating as well.

Online fabric can be hit or miss. If you’re in the US, Fabric.com is a good basic source (and purchases are returnable). Fabricmartfabrics.com has good pictures that show fabric drape, but the selection is smaller. For international, Etsy shops are sometimes good for small quantities. This was a good project and I wear the skirt all the time — good luck! ~Jen
