Hi! I need your help guys! I have to make this long dress for a wedding. I only have 4 days. I made a muslin, fitted it, bought my fabric, black satin crepe, and I’m ready to cut.
I’m only wondering if I should line the whole dress of just the bust as the instructions suggest.
It is dress no 110 from Burda 12/2006 (sorry I couldn’t find a picture anywhere on the internet). The skirt of the dress is simple and it only has a slit, rising up to the knee. Should I line it?

I guess it depends how thin your fabric is, do you feel like you’d need to wear a slip with it? Is it likely to be see through if the light shines on it? Are you going to be worried about VPL if it’s close fitting?
Maybe with the slit, it would be difficult to keep the lining from being visible when you moved/sat down and that’s why they don’t give it one in the pattern so if you did add one, I’d make sure it was with a fabric that would add to the dress. Personally, I’m really lazy about adding linings so probably wouldn’t add one if it didn’t say to do so.

No it’ s not that one, it’s the one two pages after! Well I decided to hold my horses until I sew the dress and try it on. I probably won’t line it. See my fabric is satin crepe and I’ll be using both the satin and the crepe side. Most of the satin will be inside thought, so it will be slipery enough. I will only add lining if my underwear line shows. Fortunately this fabric doesn’t wrinkle and it’s thick enough. By the way what’s VPL? Not using lining calls for a clear finish inside and since I don’ t have a serger I think I’ll try hong kong finish and bias taping the seam allowances. Do you think it would be ok using cotton bias tape…. that I already have, or should I buy satin, to match the whole concept? (I kind of know the answer, but I’d like your opinion too).

Visible Panty Line! ;)
And yes, I’d get the satin bias tape.

Hi everyone! Thank you for your help. I didn’t line the dress after all. With the right underwear no VPL! I’ll post about it in my blog soon. Thanks again

Excellent! Glad it worked. It’s a lovely pattern – I’ve looked at it a few times and wished I had an event to go to that would make it worth my making it.

Aww no! I wanted pictures!! :-)
Read your blog though, lol!, what a nightmare. Watch out the dress doesn’t get revenge on you for hiding it away in a closet though, sounds like it’s a vindictive piece :-)

Oh I didn’t thought of that… I should think of something to avoid this agly turn out! When I’ll have a functioning camera I’ll give it a try (while having garlic around my neck, calling the holy spirit and making a cross with my fingers all the time!).
