This is my first “tailored” project and I am struggling to figure out what the directions are trying to tell me. I have two main questions.
1. It says “stitch collar 8 to upper edge of front facing 9, ending at large *, as shown”. The picture shows both pieces with their interfaced sides showing, with the collar piece behind the facing piece. This doesn’t make sense to me because 1) I’ve never seen anything be stitched flat on top of another piece 2) I can’t think of how the piece would be turned to hide the seam. 3) The finished picture on the front of the pattern clearly shows the facing on top of the collar…not the other way around as the picture would suggest. My assumption now is that they must mean to put right sides together and stitch and then press the collar up….?
2. How does a hem facing work? I have attached it to the bottom of my front lining piece but I don’t quite understand how I’m supposed to match the symbols by pulling the lining down without compromising the point at the bottom corner of the vest.
I can try to scan and upload the pattern pictures if that will help!
Thanks

It may help if you can get photos or photocopies for us to see. The instructions that come with patterns are not always very helpful, neither do they always tell you the best way to do something.
These instructions may help (further down the page). http://web.archive.org/web/20101202145337/http://vintagesewing.info/1940s/42-mpd/mpd-07.html

I’m stuck in the same spot with "bring symbols on front lining to corresponding symbols on hem facing. Did you figure it out? Prom is in 6 days and this vest has to be there :(.
