Hello everyone! : )
My daughter and I have thrown ourselves into our very first dress project together and we are learning that we are a little more amateur than we thought. We are trying to learn some of the sewing terms. Right off the top of my head I am wondering what “allowances” are?
I am also wondering if it is possible to search up the pattern we just purchased? We purchased it in a store here in Norway, but I haven’t figured out how to search it on this website. It is a Burda style pattern.
Can anyone help me and my very anxious-to-get-started daughter??!!! : )
Thank you very much!!
Sincerely,
Tifany : )

Hi Tifany!
If you mean “seam allowances” that means the distance between the edge of the fabric and the stitching line. Seam allowances are sometimes also called “margins” (but not very often). If it is not for seams, then I think they just mean the amount of fabric allowed for something, e.g. a fly front, a dart, a pleat, a hem etc.
If you are searching for the pattern on-line, type in the company name and the pattern number which is the four digit number on the envelope, e.g. “Burda Sewing Pattern 1234”.
What other terms would you like to know?
I’ll make a post for my blog with some of the most important sewing terms. It’ll be up this Sunday, so if you would like some particular term explained, please ask and I’ll include it if I know it. : )
