The top thread on my sewing machine is getting tangled around the bobbin case. I can’t see anything obvious that it’s catching on, though. It seems to be wrapping around the case instead of passing across the top. I’ve cleaned it and checked that it’s installed according to the manual’s instructions, and that’s all that I can think to do.
Please help, I really don’t want to take it to the store to be fixed when it might be something I can do myself.

Is your machine a top load or front load? What’s the make and model?

It’s a Brother XR-65t. Top loading — I though that was the only kind :)

No, some load from the front, with a separate bobbin case that you take out…
A quick google reveals an awful lot of ‘How to I fix’ questions, but not a lot about the machine itself. Looks like a light weight entry level machine. Take the bobbin out and clear the thread. Make sure that when you put the bobbin back in, you have it the right way up. Also ensure the needle is in the right way round, fully inserted, and that both the top and bobbin threads are correctly threaded. The bobbin thread has a tension spring it must go through. Don’t forget to make sure the upper thread is fully between the tension disks and that you have threaded the thread take-up lever correctly.

That’s funny – I thought all machines were front loading until about a month ago when I used my friend’s neighbour’s old Singer! I was so lost!

I have both types… And one that loads from the end! :D

So, I finally took out my sewing machine again today to give it one last try, and … the thread had come out of the take-up lever. That was it; it works perfectly now. I was so sure I had broken the bobbin case that I didn’t even check that before.

Glad it was an easy fix! :)
Some take-up levers are the very devil for this. I resorted to taping one as the thread was forever jumping out.
