I would like to make a version of this dress by Sherri hill, but I’m struggling to figure out how to create the top half of the dress, while making it hang right and not look badly made?

    Hi, I’m not sure what your sewing skill are or if you need a pattern to help you along, but if you do this pattern is pretty close to what you need;

    http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/rosette-gown-122011

    Get a high necked pattern and cut about 7cm away from the neck – front and back ( plus an extra 1cm for seam allowance) ( You will need 2 lots of these; one for the lining)

    Then cut a 10 cm band round the waist.

    Then with the pattern I showed you, cut straight through the centre front and add 1cm seam allowance. Sew both centre front seams.

    Then put everything on… the neck, band and top. Pin it all together making sure the centre front is sitting flat and TIGHT.

    The top piece looks gathered under the neck and under the bust, so remember you need extra fabric for that (the pattern I picked allows for this I think). Get fabric that crushes really easily-that will gather closely together. To make it gather really nicely – do a slightly wide stitch, then pull ONE side of the thread so it gathers, then sew it into the garment no more then 2mm away from the edge of the gathered stitch.

    If you make all your seam allowances 1cm you will have a more professional finish

    Good luck :)
