Hi there,
This is my first pattern and really only my second project. I’m sewing Mini Skirt 08/2012 #135. I’ve managed to figure most of the instructions out until I got to the facing for the waistline. After pinning the facing, right sides together to the skirt, I’m stuck.
The instructions read: “At zip slit, turn facing ends back, approx 5mm before opening edge, and pin to upper edge. Turn allowances on slit edges of skirt to outside and pin to upper skirt edge. Turn allowances at slit edges to inside. Turn facing up and stitch to seam allowances, as far as possible, close to seam. Turn facing to inside and sew to zip tape and to seams.”
I’m baffled! I’ve been staring at these words for days and I can’t make head or tail of them. I can’t differentiate between the “facing ends” and the “slit edges.” What does it mean to turn facing ends back before opening edge? And how do I turn the slit edges to the outside, pin and then turn them to the inside if they’re pinned?
If anyone can give me any pointers, I’d be very appreciative!

Why don’t you try lining it? You could use a contrasting color to make the burn out pop.

You could just ignore that unholy mess and follow The Way of Kate! ;)
Make up the skirt and zip, and your facing.
With right sides together, pin the facing to the skirt, matching side seams etc.
Press the seam allowance towards the facing and understitch
Turn the facing to the inside.
Press the waist edge gently.
Fold in the ends to fit and catch down to the zip tape. Catch down at the side seam.
Job done.

Thanks for the quick (and helpful) response. That worked great. Now I have to figure out where I went wrong with the zipper at the waist! I’m sure I’ll be back with more questions …

What type of zip? Concealed or traditional?
