Hello wonderful sewers.
Is anyone out there currently, or in the past, making maternity clothing? Have you altered any BS patterns for a swelling belly? Have you made any outfits for your own pregnant body or for others? Do you seek help in this category?
I am working on a post about maternity wear and I want to include as many links as possible (from you- the community), with examples of your work. Thank you so much for reading this post & I appreciate your insight very much:) alison

Well 26 years ago when I had my first child I took several pair of stretch pants and I cut the fronts out and replaced them with store bought maternity panels. It worked.

None of these are my posts. I just did some research a while back.
Some of the best ideas here are modifying pants, making a belly cover, and the coat insert. If someone lives in a cold climate they are not going to want to buy a coat that they will wear only for a few months. I know women who have planned their pregnancies to have their final trimester in the warmer weather just so they can save money not having to buy so much special clothing.

When I helped my friend with clothes for her first pregnancy we grabbed up empire waist shirt/dress/tunic patterns. Using knit fabrics, we added extra fabric to the gathers center front or to the pleats to be extremely adjustable for the entire pregnancy. We also made them a size larger (med to Lrg) so that they would accommodate her weight gain. We couldn’t find many maternity commercial patterns and those we did were from Burda Magazine & Patterns. There just doesn’t seem to be much available. I hope this helps =)

One piece of advice, when drawing off the hemlines, remember to make it slightly longer at center front for the upward pull as the baby grows. Cordially, Nehmah
