Could anyone tell me the best sort of lace to use for an overlay for a sheath dress? Also if buying lace with a scalloped edge can I lay the pattern across the grain so as to use the scallop as the hem?
Thank you.

Not sure that there is a ‘best’ lace, it depends on the style of dress. You need to decide whether you want stretch or non stretch though and match your choice of lining accordingly. I’d guess you wouldn’t want to use a lace that was light duty as it could tear quite quickly with the wear and tear it would get. It’s fine to use it so that the scalloped edge makes the hem, that’s usually the best way.

I recently made a tight fitting dress with a full skirt and lace overlay and I just bought the prettiest lace I came across on ebay. When it came it was very stretchy , which I thought might be a problem, because the lining fabric wasn’t and my sewing machine hates anything thin or stretchy, but I didn’t have a problem and I am really happy with results of the dress.
