Can anyone tell me what is the best way to add a lace overlay to a dress. The bodice is fitted with 2 darts. The skirt is slightly gathered at waist. Thank you in advance.

Possible to make it up two ways – 1) Make up the complete dress in fabric – minus facings( sleeves?) and zip and also same in lace. Put lace dress over the top of the dress Attach by basting neck.armholes etc— Then attach facings, covered sleeves, apply zip.Hem separately. 2)Make up bodice comprising of both pieces together – so that darts are made up together ( i.e. both fabrics through to the wrong side of the garment ). Add facings, etc.. Make up skirt – - – - BUT really best separately at the side seams as they will " swish " round separately when you move.. Attach skirt together at waist and onto bodice top. Hem separately. I do hope that this helps.

It works best for me if I make 2 completely separate dresses. one in lace and one in the fabric that goes under the lace overlay dress. I used french seams for for the lace dress for a nice finish. It takes longer, but it is definitely worth it. I also make the lace overlay dress one bust size larger, so I can wear it as an overlay lace dress for other garments.
