I want to make a pea coat for my 7 yr old son. I have made him a blazers in the past. He now wants an outside coat. I have looked everywhere for a pattern. I was hoping then to use the Burda Blazer pattern. If I were to make him a blazer I’d use size 8. But for making the coat should I use a size 10 and shorten the sleeves?? will that be enough to acccomodate the insualtive lining to wear over clothing? And for the collar I was thinking on adding like 3-4 inces to make it double breasted. And now last but not least, lining……what can I use? I got Milton wool for making coats. I have a sliky like material that is like soft fur, I was thinking I could use that as the lining and insulation for a winter coat. I have no idea about inside construction of a coat. Just a blazer. Any and all advice and help is very much welcome.

    I’m sure you can!

I read in this book instructions for drafting a coat from a basic sloper: http://www.amazon.com/Make-Your-Own-Dress-Patterns/dp/0486452549/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1322561788&sr=8-9

I don’t have the book with me now, since it is an old library book, but certainly there is information in there. There was something along the lines of adding ease to certain areas. I’m sorry I can’t remember.

Also, another drafting book might be what you’re looking for as well!

Or you could just make it a size larger. Or make a coat out of a (jacket & coat) pattern, like Burda (without the skirt of course) http://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/49827

    Hope this helps!

Oliver +S have a pea coat pattern — using a pattern that is correctly sized and ready to go will save you so much time and a sizable headache too.
