Depends how big it is and what the fabric is (ie so that the pattern pieces need to be laid out in the same direction or for example if the fabric has a pattern design to it that need to be matched up at the seams). Try laying your pattern pieces out on it and see if you can get them to fit. You could always do the main part in your 72 inch fabric and other parts eg the hood, pockets or whatever in contrasting fabric if you didn’t have enough.

Thanks sewingfan! it’s a polka dot fabric and I don’t have have it yet, was hoping to buy it online but was unsure of quantity and the person only sells by the yard.

I’d estimate the length of the bodice + the length of the sleeve+ of the hood + seam allowances, to be on the safe side. That is if it’s of normal width, not narrow. Then you’d have to think more carefully about it (like: is it possible to fit two bodice-pieces side by side?). Of course, if you’re plus size it might not be enough (just saying since I have no idea about your size). Good luck, polka dot fabric sounds pretty!

it’s 72 inches wide, so i’m guessing I could fit two bodice pieces side by side. i’m a size 38.

    thanks ichigogirl!

ooh yes, it’s super pretty, it’s a pink fabric with large white polka dots. I might look like Minnie Mouse, but i don’t care.

There’s a hooded sweatshirt pattern in November magazine of Burda, it’s for size 44 plus, long sleeved and reaches about to the waist, that says you need 2.10metres for size 44 of 59in wide fabric.

There’s a Parka jacket which is the same sort of shape but reaches down to the knees practically and size 38 of that needs 2.55 metres of 57in fabric. It has large patch pockets too which I don’t know if you’d want or not. If you didn’t, then it would need less. A yard is more than 1metre (although I don’t know by exactly how much) and your fabric is a lot wider than 57in so you may just get away with it.

Depending on how expensive it is, if you definitely want to make the whole thing in the same material (and not maybe do plain cuffs and hood) I would err on the side of caution and buy extra. The number of times I’ve gone for less fabric and then found there’s just not quite enough to make what I want!! Grrrr! Although there is usually a way round it, it’s frustrating (and takes more work).

A lot of fabric sites let you buy half metres too so you could go for 1.5 metres maybe?

yeah! i’ll ask the seller! i saw it on etsy or ebay, i bookmarked it. so i’ll go check.

thank you for all the information! I got the december 2011 issue of burdastyle today and there’s some sort of pullover thingy in it that I might use as the pattern.

Beware, a yard is LESS than one meter (exactly it’s 0.9144 meter)

If you have the pattern pieces already then try a layout one some newspaper. Layout newspapers on the floor and measure then and mark the width and length of the fabric. Draw the line over with a bright ink pen. Then lay over your pattern pieces and move them around. Make sure you use the grain lines correctly. Also don’t lay edge to edge because often the knit fabric has a selvage edge of 1-2" that you might want to cut off unless it is going to be inside a seam.

A yard is 36 inches and one metre is about 40 inches.
