I just bought a sweater dress that has a very full deep cowl neckline. The cowl folds inward. It starts at the shoulders and drapes in the front. What is the best way to shorten the neckline? It is made of a thin sweater knit material. I am just above a novice when it comes to sewing so please keep it simple. : ) Thanks
It looks something like this only much deeper:

You have to take it up at the shoulder seams. If there is a seam at the shoulder it makes it easier. Just rip out the seam, bring the shoulder up to your desired neckline. (Pin it first to make sure you like where it is) then sew each shoulder seam to the back shoulder seam. Hope that helps!
