Although you have selected a very pretty dress, with waterfall skirt, I have to say it’s probably too complicated for a beginner to tackle. That beautiful, flowing material is chiffon… It’s evil. Most seasoned seamstresses I know hate this material, because it’s very tricky to work with. It can also be expensive. It’s not something I recommend you use unless you are super comfortable in your ability to sew.

As for the dress design, the best way to begin is by searching pattern catalogs for a dress that has a similar appearance. You will not find an exact copy of this design. Many of the patterns available by McCall’s and Simplicity are more simplified designs, this is because they need to sell to both beginner and advanced seamstresses. You may find nothing compares, which is unfortunate, but a grim reality of sewing. The only other way to achieve this dress design is through pattern drafting, which takes years to conquer and really is something I feel should be taught rather than self explored.

The best thing you can do at this point is to stick to pattern catalogs and practicing sewing basic dresses; eventually you will build your skill set allowing you to do minor alterations to pattern designs.
