Hi all!
Am very excited to be getting started on using my (very old!) sewing machine I inherited!
I have one problem – I don’t understand how to work out how much fabric you need for the projects. I am looking to make the Danielle dress and am Burda size 40 – can anyone please advise how much material I need? As I am allergic to wool I am looking to make this in a heavy material – any suggestions – will cotton do?
Thanks in advance for your help – sorry for the ignorance!

Any fabric with a similar ‘hand’ and drape to the original will work, whatever the fibre content. Look at the original and decide if this was a dress weight, a suit weight, or something else, and try to find a fabric that will work for you. I too am allergic to wool, and only use it where it can be fully lined, edge to edge, or for garments where I’ll be wearing something under it that will prevent it touching my skin, such as a winter coat. It’s very annoying, as wool makes fabulous fabrics to work with.
As this was originally made in a soft woven crushed velvet, I should look for something soft in a dress weight WOVEN fabric.
As for working out how much fabric… There’s a chart put out by Simplicity some years ago that has classic garment yardages on, which should help, though you will need extra fabric for larger sizes, for very wide flares, and for asymetrical patterns… I’ll see if I can find it. Meanwhile, the yardage needed for the dress fabrics is listed in the instructions, on the first page.

I had a good poke about, but I can’t find it on the internet. As I remember, it came as a laminated postcard thing in one of the magazines… Must be 20 years ago now! I still have that card lolling about somewhere, and will dig it out and scan it.
