I’m a bit confused about the order in which you do alterations. I’m making a fairly simple top with raglan sleeves. I’m tall so I need to lengthen in the top of the armholes, the chest above the bust and at the top of the sleeves. I also need to do an FBA, and then lengthen below that so the torso section is longer and the waist in the right place.
According to Fit for Real People I should do do the lengthening before I do an FBA. Is that right? I thought you worked your way down?
Can anyone advise me? Thanks!

I tend to lengthen first and then do the FBA. Lengthen all round according to how much extra you need in the back rather than the front: the aditional extra length in the front for the bust comes in with the FBA.

Just an update on this – I’m still working on getting this pattern right – I put it away last year, but now I’m back at it. So far I’ve made the following changes and it’s coming together nicely:
- fba - lengthen at armhole and waist (because I’m tall) - high upper round back adjustment (too much computer work!)
I’d still like to add a tiny bit more to the length and also lower the neckline a bit, maybe a 1/4 inch (i.e. forward tilting neck adjustment I think it’s called). But after that I should be good to actually make a final version.
It’s been good learning to research and learn all about adjustments. I’ve been using these books: Fit for Real People, Perfect Fit, and Fast Fit.

Those are the books I recommend for this sort of thing. There is an upper back adjustment that works like the FBA for Dowagers Hump and stooped postures. It add a bit extra above the bra strap line, at shoulder blade and above, just where you need it.

It’s amazing how easy that upper back adjustment is!
