Just alter the back of the pattern to include the cut out shape you want, just remember to allow for seam allowance.

i made my cutout by essentially making the back and the facing about the same width, sewing them together and turning out. i like it ok, but it’s a little trapezoidally weird. about as weird as the word trapezoidally – you get it, but something’s still not quite right. i heard of one woman tracing a circle into the center of the back, but i’m not exactly sure how that would work. for my next one, i think i’m going to cut a big rectangle out to avoid the weird shape. how that helps!
