Burda Style For people who sew

Hi,

Sewing related but not clothes, can anyone recommend a good book for making curtains that I might be able to find at my library? I want to make lined ones for our bedroom and want them to look professional.

  Hello Jane, Just do a google for “How do I make lined curtains or drapes?” Then go to library and see if they have the books. Look for books with pictures as we are all visual when looking at instructions.

  Many books are similar, just remember to get enough fabric and allow for pattern repeats if fabric has a print the books will help you with the lengths and the widths.

  Suggestion is to make at least a 4 inch double hem (if fabric is thinner like a silk) on bottom of the fashion fabric of the curtains or drapes and blind hem them, it makes them hang so much better, also do not skimp on the width, use french seams if joining panels, otherwise you may as well hang a sheet on the window.

  Go to a custom drapery shop and check out some of their styles, not hard takes patience.

  Definitely line your curtains, as patti-r suggested. I made lined tab top curtains for my living room 11 years ago, making sure to buy enough fabric for the pattern return, as well as suitable lining material. It was well worth the time I put into the double hems, and using a good lining fabric. I would go to the home-dec section of your favorite fabric store and ask for help in how much fabric to purchase, what lining to use, etc. And go at a time when they have a great sale so you can splurge on just what you want. Take your time, measure correctly, use excellent thread, etc.

  Thanks for the tips- I definitely need to line them, our room gets light so early (summer down here).

  Why do you need to french seam if joining panels?

  i have a blind hem foot for my machine which is great.

  I usually use the french seam because it adds strength to the seam by enclosing, it also prevents any show through of serger or stitiching lines, you do not have to do this, just the way I learned.
