Hi all,
I’ve spotted a big baggy dress in my local 2nd hand store which I quite fancy having a go and altering into something more attractive (to my taste anyway!). It’s a full length dress that looks as though it has permanent pleats as the skirt. I’ve not been in the shop to touch and feel as I’ve just seen it in the window, but it looks likes plain cotton material. If the pleats are ‘permanent’ is there a way I can iron them out somehow if I remove the skirt from the main bodice of the dress? I don’t really want to buy it if I can’t remove these pleats as I’d be aiming to turn the skirt part into a pencil style, pleats aren’t really ‘me’ right now if you get my drift.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks

If the fabric is a synthetic, likely the pleats are permanent. If you think the fabric might be cotton or wool, you might be able to get the pleats out with wetting and ironing. Sometimes there will be a discolouration where the pleat was.
If you can’t take the pleats out — try working with them to make an interesting fabric. Take the dress apart. Where the pleats are, sew very close to the edge of the fold with some coloured thread to make something like a small tuck pleat. then press it all flat when you are finished.

Hi Mickeygirl, Sorry I’ve only just seen your reply for August! I decided not to buy the dress in the end. As it happens, the fabric was synthetic and on closer inspection the colour wasn’t really what I was after. Thanks for your advice!
