I’ve been sewing for a little while now & think i’m getting fairly good at it using paper patterns but want i really want is to learn how to make patterns from scratch as i have loads of ideas but no clue how to convert them into a garment…
Have tried to enrole on a fashion & textiles course at college but think my application was too late for this year so i’m looking for a good book to help me get started… something thats easy to follow for a complete beginner to pattern making… can anyone reccomend one?
Thanks in advance for your help
Heidi

i read ‘how to design your own clothes and make your own patterns’ by claudia ein. the basis of the book is using a custom fit sloper system to creat different clothes. there is a basic bodice pattern here on burda. the book tells you how to fit the basic patterns to you and then how to alter your master patterns for differnt styles you want to create. it was written in 1975, but all of the designs discussed in the book are used today, except the bell bottoms. i found my copy on ebay, but i’m sure that copies are easy to find. i can take some pictures later and put a link to them for you so you can see some so you could decide if you like it. ana555

I went to the library and went through their selection and to a few bookshops and had a close look at various books to find which I liked. I ended up with Make Your Own Dress Patterns by Adele P Margolis, it has been reprinted many times since the 50’s I believe with the latest in 2006, ( I am obviously not the only one to like it). This and Modern Pattern Design, by Harriet Pepin which is reproduced on http://www.vintagesewing.info/1940s/42-mpd/mpd-toc-long.html for free, this is another old book, but I find it full of useful, relevant and timeless information. Happy book hunting

Hello Heidi, One of the best blog sites which has just posted it’s final edition, has drafting instructions for specific patterns. If you wanted a pair of slacks, the instructions will tell you how to draft these slacks. The site is still up. I will post (I hope) the link here. As I am still learning to link, it may take two or three before I get it correct. Cordially, Nehmah GOTO: <a href="http://wkdesigner.wordpress.com>draft-link Click on the words “draft-link”. N

Hi there,
I’ve often found ‘Built by Wendy’ to be really great patterns, so when I discovered that she has written two books about patterns and sewing I bought them right away… they’re called Sew U and Sew U Stretch … and they have paper patterns included but really great simple tips on how to draft changes in those pattern pieces and now I’ve found I don’t need pattern pieces at all, cause Wendy’s instructions has helped me learn the shapes of pieces.
Also have you seen the Weekend Designer’s blog? http://wkdesigner.wordpress.com/ there’s LOADS of instructions on drafting here, but unfortunately he’s not continuing the blog each weekend, but the archives are all up there! Yay!
