Hi all, I’m thinking about buying a rotary cutter, but I’m not sure which brand is the best. I’m looking for a good quality rotary cutter at a reasonably cheap price (at around $15 to $25)

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks :D

Take a look at the Olfa, Fiskars and Clover ones. None are cheap, but you gets what ya pays fer! ;)

Look at 45mm bladed ones: these are the most versatile for both garments and quilting. I also use smaller ones for tighter corners and larger ones for long cuts and heavier fabrics.

Buy the largest cutting mat you can get hold of. Mortgage a small child and get at least two, preferably three really big ones if you want to cut garments, so you don’t have to move anything half way through cutting it!

Thanks for the advice! It’s hard picking between Olfa and Fiskars because they both have their pros and cons. Which one do you prefer?

I have a couple of each and find no real difference in use between them. Just get the ergonomic Olfa rather than the straight one.

I’m pretty happy with my Fiskars rotary cutter, I would advice you to stay away from the Martha Stewart brand rotary cutters. I received a beautiful Martha Stewart rotary cutter as a present once and was never able to get it to cut properly without seriously putting fingers at risk. I brought this same rotary cutter to my clothing construction class in school and my instructor was also befuddled and put off by this rotary cutter. =)

I’ve been using the Olfa models for years and am very happy with them (yes, I have more than one!). I’d also recommend getting one of those yellow grid rulers made for quilters to help with cutting straight lines. They are a bit thicker than regular rulers so you have less of a chance of the blade jumping up over the ruler and hitting your hand.

I love my Fiskars :) It cuts through anything, and Im very happy I havent cut my fingers off yet. I’ve heard good things about Olfa as well, but have not tried one.

I use an Olfa (45 mm) and I love it. As a total beginner it’s made cutting a breeze.
