Hello
I was wondering if anyone could help out a few things with the Alison pattern as im finding the instructions less than vague!
I’ve managed to fumble through most of it although 2 things confuse me
1. The giant rounded edge square that is the front insert-does this need to be folded over before gathering so there are no raw edges at the top of the breast? (Ive already sewn this part by gathering the entire thing and just folding under the top 1cm to hide the raw part-was just a question for future really)
2. Main problem..the instructions simply say ‘sew the band onto the swimsuit’ without actually saying how. It says to make a tube and turn it the right way…but do you sew this onto the suit right sides facing like a normal seam and press inwards…or does the tube get topstiched onto the edge of the suit all the way around?
Im sorry its difficult to describe what i mean, i hop someone understand and can help! Thanks so much, cant bear yet another failed project :-S

I haven’t made the Alison but I have made a simular suit.
1. yes the tab is sewn into a tube then attached to hold down the middle of the bust.
2.I think I would sew the tab and the bust to the suit all at the same time. I would top stitch with the triple stitch, but in Burda Style pics it’s not, to hold the seams in place and to minimize rubbing

Thank you! I have done the tab part, just to clarify i actually meant the band for the straps…sorry i should have said that. Thank you for your advice though, much appreciated :-)

The destructions for this suit are… Um… ‘Inadequate’ barely touches the edges!
Yes you fold the big square in half.
Yes you make a tube out of the tab piece.
Yes, you need to reshape the crotch piece so that it doesn’t have those corner in the middle, or it won’t fit you…
And no, you can’t sew the band into a tube all the way along or you have no seam allowance to sew to the body of the suit. You have to leave the middle section unsewn and just sew each and into the tube…
Here are my LJ entries on this one. I have yet to get back and finish it…

Thanks so much! Your instructiosn were soooo much better…although i still managed to mess it up sigh. Didnt suit body type at all either so there goes another bit of fabric and another item to the UFO graveyard….

I must admit I found the instructions a bit confusing myself, so just sort of winged it. turns out I did excatly what kate has posted here. Slightly change mine though, its a dress, but in cuttin fabric I forgot to make it longer and leave off the curves for the legs, so will now have to sew a skirt to it covering that seam just below waist in silver sequins giving it a dropwaist look, fingers crossed

Hi, cant seem to find that on mine!! The big square type thing is the bust part, there’s a shape like two triangles together thats the crotch, then the 2 shaped pieces for the front and back body. The short strip is the band for the middle of the bust and the long strips are the straps. Bit vague but hope it helps!!

Oh, okay, I think it must be the bust-gathering strip. I’m not clear on the back band part…the piece that’s on top of the back body. Also, are people hemming or doing binding on the legs? With elastic? This is my first swimsuit; I can visualize how it should go together even with the much-less-than-clear instructions but… Here goes nothing! Thanks for the reply.

this suit was a total fail for me…aside from the bad instructions (but the LJ entries were very helpful!), upon trying it on, it’s too short in the waist, the top barely covers what it’s supposed to and is baggy, the back gaps badly, the bust part was too wide resulting in the “neck” strap going way too far back, practically round the back of my arms, definitely not around my neck (maybe this part is because i didn’t know where i was supposed to be matching things up and did it wrong…no markings at all on the pattern. supposed to gather the bottom of the insert maybe? no idea…just know it’s waaay too big for my small chest), the part where the crotch meets the front lands in an uncomfy spot, further back than i’d expect. sooo. just my feedback on this project, i’m not looking for help, too frustrated with the pattern and the fabric to try it again anytime soon.
ETA: WHOOPS! well i unpicked most of it and go figure, the inset was folded the wrong way. that should help…
