I want to start making my own patterns because I can never find exactly what I want. The thing is, I have never stretched anything! I don’t even know where to begin. I see it in my head but have no idea how to get it in a pattern. I am horrible at drawing but my imagination is endless. I have often created something (like a skirt) just by measuring my waist (and length wanted -for example) and using that measurement to cut the fabric. Where do I learn to do sketches?

Just found this terrific blog www.abeautifulmess.com/2013/02/fashionsketching-for-beginners. Such sensible advice and lots on the comments too. Good luck and let us know how you get on I would love to know what you think of the blog. Wish I had found it years ago.

What they teach in design school is to sketch a body, or copy the outline of a body from a magazine. Every time you want to draw an outfit – just put a sheet of paper on top of the body sketch, draw in the outfit, then fill in the body around it. It keeps the perspective and shape in check.

If you want to let me know your email (you can put it on my wall) I can send you a copy of a basic body

Use croquis for design sketches. There are lots of free ones on the web. And you need to learn how to draft patterns and drape on a body. It;s fun, but hard work.
