hey all! i’m going to a gala at the end of the month (of october) and i’m planning to make my dress. my brain is on overload right now with millions of ideas so i need your help.
i had this basic idea.

I’m planning to use sheer organza (for the outer shell) because I want the outer shell’s sleeves to have definition. I am a little intimidated because i suspect it’s a fairly costly fabric, but it has the texture and stiffness/flow i’m looking for.
I need your help with the details, or even if you would think using organza is a bad idea… let me know.
I was thinking of having a neckline like this: linktext
other possible details i had in mind was a bubble hem, as the organza would really make it look like a bubble.
As for color, I was thinking black. I don’t want to really stand out! I’m going for modest so no plunging necklines or anything, but I love small details.
So… any suggestions or advice on how to go about this dress?
(i crossposted this on other categories. not sure where this would be best posted. this can be deleted here and moved if that would be more appropriate)

organza can be a bit frustrating. it shifts and moves around….a lot. in my experience, unless i pulled a thread nothing was on the grain properly and therefor hung poorly (the same is true of chiffon, though i usually can fix it enough to pass with either fabric). best bet is to pull a thread to make sure it’s on grain (they might do this for you at the fabric store; be sure to ask sweetly when they aren’t super busy) and pin carefully and a bit more than usual.
i know joann’s has a nice polyester organza for around $8 a yard. you shouldn’t need more than 2-3 yards.
the basic idea sounds pretty good. if you want to do the bubble hem, the easiest way is to have the organza attatched to the under dress at least at the hem (at the waist too would help).
good luck!
