Hi,
How is tapework done? Is it a type of embroidery? Can tapework fabric be bought?
I would like to make a tapework dress- but I have no idea where to start!
I have been looking at tapework dresses here:
Can anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial or fabric for sale?
Thanks!

Why don’t you try lining it? You could use a contrasting color to make the burn out pop.

The examples I have seen close too are made by sewing the tape to a backing fabric in the pattern wanted, and then the backing is taken away. This can be dissolved in acid like devoree, or simply by using a wash-away stabilizer.
In some cases, the backing fabric is left in some reas and cut away in others.

Agree with Kate, made in different ways and methods are used. Check out this jacket see they have sewn tape to mesh backing fabric just for a simple visual: http://www.willhopelove.com/tapework-mesh-jacket/w1/i1003596/
If you can find it by the yard examine it closely, if folded or on roll make sure that no holes or snags in fabric near where tape has been stitched.
In the past made a silk chiffon jacket overlay with celtic designs, Patience was needed!!
