I love making jackets. You can’t have enough jackets. They turn a stained T-shirt into a fabulous garment without anyone knowing. I want a leather jacket, but I hate the boxy versions on the market and hate the price points even more. I want to take the challange of making myself a leather jacket, BUT WHERE DO I SOURCE THE LEATHER? I have read the tips written about sewing with suede, but I would love all the advice you can give because THIS GIRL NEEDS A LEATHER JACKET!

Tandy is it unless you want to purchase quite a few hides. Where I live there is a upholstery shop supply house that sells hides but I think they are to heavy for jackets. I think El Paso Imorts sell some hides but not sure what your looking for. Pig suede is the cheapest and is used to make leather muslins, the average hide is $10. I’ve had great luck with Tandy, being a leather novice, I’ve always found them to be helpful.

i love www.leatherimpact.com … i’ve never ordered from their online store, but their NYC store is pretty amazing. you’ll probably have to inquire about prices, but i love their selection!

A possible cheap place – anywhere near your location make furniture? I live in the same town as a furniture plant, and have had good luck asking about what they do with scraps in the past. This particular plant is really picky about what they use for leather upholstery, and I’ve scored some huge, butter soft, beautiful peices in the past for little to nothing. Not always much choice of color, weight, etc, but can’t beat the price.

here’s the link to the topic about sewing leather once you’re ready to sew (there’s a LOT of good information): http://www.burdastyle.com/discussions/skill-tank/topics/leather-jacket-coat

make sure to check for western outfitters, saddle/horse shops, etc. Some of them sell leather pelts. Also, some large beading and craft stores (not Joann’s, etc) will include leather.

Call Leather Impact in NYC. They have great prices and an insane array of colors.
Just as a sample a 12 SQ FT hide of garment leather of medium weight (don’t know how many ozs) was $104. A thinner weight was $75.
