I have decided that I want to invest in a serger. After a bit of research (I haven’t yet tried it out), I am considering a Bernina 1150 MDA. However, when I contacted the local dealer, she said I really feel that if you are going to invest in a serger today, you need a coverstitch. This is something that I initially thought was out of my price range. So when I started looking into machines that do both, and what other people who sew prefer, I was surprised to find that many prefer two separate machines. I guess switching back and forth from serging to coverstitch can be a bit of an ordeal.
I would love to hear from your ideas on this. Did you buy one machine and wish that you had bought another with different features? Thanks!

A lot will depend on what you want to sew. I have the 1150MDA, and when I bought it I also looked at the serger that had the cover stitch included. It was a LOT more money for something that is, to me, of limited use. I don’t make a lot of sports wear, and for the little I do that a cover stitch would be nice for, it isn’t worth the learning curve or the time needed to convert the machine to the stitch and back. I can get as good a result using a twin or triple needle in my ordinary sewing machine.
If I ever start needing to do a LOT of this process, I’ll buy a cover stitch machine rather than another serger.

I agree with Kate and just thought I’d chime in that I bought the 1150MDA about 6 months ago and I love it so much, I did lots of investigation before I eventually chose this model, it really adds the next level of professionalism to my garments and has taken my sewing to the next level. So, that’s my 10 cents worth :)

i already had a serger that i liked alot (that didn’t have coverstitch function), so a few years later i ended up buying a second one (5-thread) that can do coverstitch….in retrospect, i wish i’d kept it simple and purchased a used compact-version of a coverstitch machine that i’d seen on ebay for about $125….as the 5-thread serger doesn’t function very dependably, and a simple coverstitch machine would most likely have been more dependable, and thus get used more!

Thank you all for your input. I think I will go with the 1150MDA and not let the sales lady sell me the machine that also does coverstitch. It’s always great to hear other people’s opinions.
