Hello there, has anyone used Cochinelle pattern-making software? I am trying to decide between Wild Ginger’s Pattern Master Boutique & Cochinelle but feel as if I need some true accounts of people’s experiences with these programs. I have a Mac which Pattern Master seems to not be ideal for whereas Cochinelle is compatible with Macs. Any help would be greatly appreciated:)

p.s. I know I asked about this last week but I can’t find the posting, sorry!

Cochinelle pattern software was originally for designing knits — for the knitting machine or hand knitting but now it can be used to make patterns for other fabrics.

I use Pattern Master but then I am using Windows. Maybe try to get on a Mac users website and ask if anyone uses it.

I’m not that familiar with either, but don’t these rely on pre-programmed base shapes?

I can only tell you that the Wild Ginger Click & Sew 1103 skirts/pants is a basic sloper/block software set-up. I had a “discussion” with the tech who was a tad testy when I pointed this out. Her response was along the lines of, Well what did you expect?" After that, I was not too keen on spending $$$ on the more responsive of WG’s CDs. Cordially, Nehmah

That’s an important bit to know, Nehmah. Bad support is the worst, especially when the software is a bit more expensive. Too bad, really.

By the way, there are some more applications out there – put “sewing pattern software” into a search engine, they pop up.

I found Wild Ginger to give really good support to me when I had a question. They even emailed me sewing instructions for something I was having a problem with.

Try their downloads first to see it that is what you want. I bought the click and sew first. The other programmes have an editing function that you can use to change the drafts it makes or just draft from scratch.

The Marie Clayton book uses Pattern Maker It will not run on a Macintosh without additional software such as WINE, bootcamp, or parallels.

I’ve not found anything I really feel like putting out real $ to buy (for MacOS). I bought some things for Windows and ran them on Bootcamp on the Mac, but it’s a pain to have to reboot under Windows every time I want to use them. The Bernina software I found tempting, but it’s a closed box – you can’t add in your own designs. I have been investigating using a basic CAD package to do the job, but this solution has a steep learning curve before you even get close to something that will work. Good luck with your quest, Alison, and let us know what you end up doing, it might help others in the Mac world decide!

I run MacOS, and have VMWare Fusion loaded to run Windows XP. I easily run all sorts of windows based sewing programs on the mac. It fires up in seconds, but usually I just leave a windows window open, with no noticeable drain on power. Had issues with bootcamp and my bernina software that are completely non-existent now. HIGHLY recommend to enjoy the best of both worlds.

I own most of the major pattern making software out there. My favorite by far is My Pattern Designer. www.mypatterndesigner.com. I like it for the more hip and trendier styles (real jeans, grecian wraps, shirring, etc) and for the very complete sewing instructions, with illustrations, that are available on every pattern screen. The jeans instructions in particular are really, really thorough. With wild ginger, I frequently wasn’t real sure sometimes, and I generally know what I’m doing! Did you download the demos? I think they all have free ones to give it a whirl. Good luck, and have fun.
