I have designed a coat that I want to make out of neoprene. Has anyone worked with neoprene? Being that is a non-traditional fashion fabric it is not readily available in big-box fabric stores, has anyone bought neoprene before? I found a supplier that will ship pre-cut pieces of neoprene in various thickness’. What thickness is appropriate for a winter/fall style coat…2 mm? 3mm? 4mm?
Cheers!

Sounds ambitious! I’d recommend a book by Sandra Betzina (Fabric Savvy), as she does mention neoprene, needle size to use and techniques for sewing/working with it.
I’d marvel if you managed to wear that coat in winter and be warm! Think of the colours that neoprene can come in…:)

Happened to see this coat featured in a fall fashion article in a Canadian paper. There are zoom-in/out buttons to allow you to see the detail. Hope this helps you!

I sewed a neoprene case for my husband’s ebook reader. I cut up a larger lap top sleeve that I bought at a dollar store. It was easy to sew. You only have to remember that the needle makes holes that show so think before you sew so there are no mistakes.
I think that you would want a lining in the coat. Do those neoprene suit wearing divers get sweaty or does it have limited insulating qualities?
