Hi all.
My Girlfriend has set me a challenge that I could not make her a dress for the summer, so I downloaded the pattern for the Mila 6023……..and I’m confused already.
The instructions and the pattern print say that I need 1 x inner front piece, but the pattern layout clearly shows 2 x…..also i’m unsure which pieces need to be of a different coulour material.
I have no sewing experience at all, but I do have a sewing machine that belonged to my Nan…( think it was bought in 1968). I reckoned if i did a bit of required reading and a few sample bits of sewing, then i’d be well on my way.
Any help would be appreciated…………or shall I admit defeat and put my hand in my pocket, buy one and try and pull it off that I made it…??
Many thanks
Jason

Maybe buy a hand-made dress, otherwise it’ll show… only joking, you have to give it a try now, really! what’s to loose? – the pattern layout by the way only shows one inner front piece – the fabric is folded on the dashed line in the diagram, as it would come from the bolt. Look where it says ‘centre front fold, straight grain’ on piece no 2, means this edge is aligned with the fold. In comparison it says ‘centre front, straight grain’ on piece no 1, and if you look at the little circles in the corners of the pattern you can see that there is seam allowance included for this edge and there’s no seam allowance along the centre fold edge (hence little circle on edge). Good luck!

Hi, thanks for your response.
So far……I bought some material and cut out all my required pieces after finally understanding the pattern….and last night I transferred all my size lines onto the material and cut all the pieces to the required size……I even watched a few you tube clips and have now sewn all the darts.
Now having read the assembly instructions again and again, i’m back to being lost…..lol.
Tonight I will read again to try and squeeze it all into my tiny man brain….
Oh and I also did the pleats……….which I think I did right……can I upload photos here???

Make a toile first to practice the sewing techniques and to work out what goes where if the instructions are inadequate.

Congratulations to you for making your first garment! I always found that if I was struggling to understand what instructions meant, the only thing to do was walk away and leave it alone for a bit. After a while understanding would come to me and I could go back to it.
Don’t be discouraged, it gets easier.

Mila is not the best pattern to be your first. It’s got a pretty confusing construction method, and the instructions are less than stellar. If you’re set on Mila, be SURE to check out the comments on the different Mila projects before you cut it out. That inner piece is SUPER low-cut, as in it won’t even cover the top of her bra.
I’d suggest Danielle as a fabulous beginner pattern, and the bonus is that it’s incredibly flattering.

Hi. You’re right. It was a bit difficult and the instructions did phase me a little. But, I have completed it and too be fair it looks ok. Some of my stitching could of been better as I did take a few shortcuts by not pinning some things etc. (won’t be taking shortcuts again!!!!)
How do I put a picture on here. ????
I have also made 3 of the popover dresses for my daughter and some friends children.
Kinda have the sewing bug now. Ha

Good for you! If you conquered Mila, you should be awfully proud of yourself. It’s a bit of a pain in the *. I hope your gf likes the finished product! As for uploading photos, you have to go into your personal section, and where it says “My studio,” you click on upload a new project. You then give it a description and add the images. Looking forward to seeing it. Message me on my wall when you’ve got it up. I signed on to upload another Mila myself. I just finished all those damned hooks and eyes a half-hour ago…TWO YEARS AFTER STARTING THE DRESS!!! Lol.
