Burda Style For people who sew
So I’ve been away at college all year where muslin comes free and new bolts magically appear, and now that I’m back home (and totally broke) I’ve realized how expensive good muslin actually is!
What I was wondering is: Can I use newspaper to drape on a dress form? In theory, yeah, sure… but is there anyone out there who’s done this successfully? And if so could you let me in on the secrets of your success?

I sometimes drape with paper. It works for stiffer fabrics. You can get cheap muslin/calico from Ikea. And there are always old bed sheets from the charity/thrift stores…

I buy muslin directly from Rockland, when it’s on sale. I can get it for 85 cents a yard with shipping in a 45in width.

I find that any cheap fabric will work as long as it is similar in weight to the fashion fabric you are planning on using.

It works better when you don´t have too many frills and poofs and things because the newspaper rips. I actually DO use newspaper to drap very simple non frilly things.

Thank you all so much! I live on an island, so fabric has to be shipped and it’s not cheap, but all of your ideas have been wonderful! I can’t wait to test them out!

Old bedsheets work for me, and, say if you are making a dress, I only make the bits I am scared that might not fit – eg just the unsleeved bodice and the skirt just long enough to check hip fit (but maybe everyone does that already . ) :))
